The banner of Austria has three equivalent flat groups of red (top), white, and red. The Austrian triband is in light of the escutcheon of the Babenberg tradition, recorded in the 13th century. It may have seen use in banners from about the 15th century,[citation needed] close by the dark and-yellow shades of the Place of Habsburg and other symbol of the Sacred Roman Domain. It was embraced as a maritime ensign in the 18th century, and as national banner in 1918.
